Comparison of advantages and disadvantages of wire drawing dies (1)

The materials of various wire drawing dies have their own characteristics. Among them, natural diamond wire drawing dies are the most expensive and extremely difficult to process. At the same time, due to the anisotropy of natural diamonds, there is a significant difference in hardness within the radial range, which is prone to severe wear in a certain direction. Therefore, natural diamond dies are only suitable for processing wire with very small straight diameters. The hardness of hard alloy molds is relatively low, and the wire drawn with hard alloy molds has higher quality and lower surface roughness. However, the wear resistance of hard alloy molds is poor, and the service life of the molds is short. The hardness of polycrystalline diamond molds is second only to that of natural diamonds. Due to their isotropic characteristics, they do not produce a single phenomenon of increased radial wear. However, their price is very expensive, processing is difficult, and manufacturing costs are high. The CVD coating wire drawing die has good wear resistance due to its diamond properties, and the surface roughness of the drawn wire is relatively low. However, the manufacturing process of the CVD coating wire drawing die is complex, difficult to process, and has high costs; When the coating is worn out, the mold will rapidly wear out, making it difficult to ensure processing quality and cannot be reused. It can only be scrapped. Ceramic materials have higher hardness and wear resistance than hard alloys, and their production cost is low. They are excellent materials for making wire drawing dies between diamond and hard alloys. However, due to the poor toughness, thermal shock, and processing difficulties of ceramic materials, they have not yet been widely applied.
In the drawing process of small wires and wires, natural diamond, polycrystalline diamond, and CVD coated molds are commonly used as drawing die materials. When drawing small diameter wire, CVD coated diamond molds overcome the anisotropy of natural diamond molds, while possessing excellent strength and hardness, achieving the highest drawing yield and surface quality requirements. Experiments have shown that the lifespan of CVD coated diamond wire drawing dies is equivalent to that of natural diamond dies, with high product qualification rates and better surface quality than domestic polycrystalline diamonds. Therefore, for the drawing process of small diameter wire, CVD coated diamond wire drawing dies are an ideal choice.
